This week, the listserv function for the Shared Interest Groups will be closed and be replaced by the Shared Interest Groups and Committees group functions on MyForum. MyForum will be the main tool that will help you communicate with more of your colleagues and upload and share resources with other members.

First introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives over two years ago, the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 3772) was recently re-introduced by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV). The Act would amend the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (29 U.S.C. 201 et seq.) through measures intended to narrow the existing gender gap in pay.

The Illinois CPA Society, working with State Rep. Robert Rita (D-28, Blue Island), introduced legislation to amend the Illinois Public Accounting Act to extend the registered CPA sunset from June 30, 2010, to July 1, 2012, and to update the peer review section to conform to AICPA peer review standards. Gov. Quinn signed House Bill 6415 on June 25, 2010 at the request of ICPAS.

Forum is pleased to announce the addition of three new hires, including two senior-level executives, to its full-time staff of dedicated association professionals. Effective this month, Keith Bura, CPA, CAE, joined Forum as chief financial and operating officer; Susan Urbanczyk, CAE, as director of marketing and communications; and Jamari Trent as program coordinator. Because Congress is hard at work on health care reform legislation, which it hopes to pass before the end of the year, ASAE last week sent a letter to Capitol Hill in which it urged legislators to be mindful of associations' unique ability to serve as conduits for providing health insurance to millions of Americans.

In an effort to protect associations from detrimental federal requirements, the Forum is asking its members to support the efforts of ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership by sending their U.S. senators a letter from ASAE President & CEO John Graham - along with their own note of opposition - objecting to Sen. Chuck Grassley's (R-Iowa) amendments to the health care reform bill being considered by the Senate Finance Committee.

Aiysha Johnson, MA, IOM was recently promoted and now serves as Forum's director of education and programs. In this expanded role, she is responsible for developing content for Forum's educational programs including Forum on the River full-and-half day programs, Annual Meeting, and Holiday Showcase. Aiysha provides management oversight for meetings logistics, is co-staff liason of the Content Committee and provides content strategic support across the organization.

Recently, I along with Forum members Betty Shanahan, CAE, from the Society of Women Engineers, and Brenda Duncan from the Healthcare Information and Management System Society, worked the Forum booth at the NAACP Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Diversity Job Fair. During the event, we were able to help show how associations are great places to work. We generated significant interest in our profession and had fun at the same time. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me. The only qualification is that you be an enthusiastic advocate of the association profession, oh, and have the ability to say "hello."
The Association Forum of Chicagoland is now accepting applications to its 2009-2010 Workforce Diversity Scholarship Program, centered on developing individuals' leadership skills. The one-year program, from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010, provides scholarship winners with mentoring, education and resources to help them meet career challenges in association/nonprofit management. The application deadline is Feb. 27.

The legal pitfalls of association management are often overlooked - a particularly serious issue given that so many new association professionals come from an unrelated field. The "Essentials of Association Law" session this Wednesday at Forum on the River will focus on the basics that all association professionals should know about association law. As the Forum has previously reported, efforts have been underway to secure a legislative solution to the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) onerous fax regulations, which were drafted last summer are are set to go into effect January 1, 2005.
