Risk Management Secrets Every Executive Should Know

Program Description: Risk management is one of the key fiduciary duties association boards and staff face. Many member and staff leaders think of risk only in terms of “financial” elements. However, as associations grapple with competition for membership, increasing expectations from corporate partners, cyber piracy, and other challenges, risk management needs to be thought of more broadly. The balanced scorecard concept has been around for nearly 20 years – used primarily to manage and improve performance. However, the concept can also be a helpful in identifying and managing risks – considering the following perspectives:
  • People: board directors, other member leaders, and employees
  • Financial: membership dues, product/program/service revenue, corporate support, and investment capital and income Goodwill: overall public reputation, stature within the industry or profession, and working relationships with vendors and advocacy partners
  • Property: buildings, equipment, technology, copyrights and trademarks

This session will provide guidance in implementing an effective risk management strategy in attendees’ associations.

At this session, participants will:
  • Identify and categorize the types of risks associations typically face.
  • Frame out a process for improving risk management at their association, involving both the board and staff.
  • Convey to their board and staff leaders a format for communicating progress on risk mitigation.
