Workforce Diversity Scholarships Can Help Individuals, Organizations Achieve Their 2010 Goals
CHICAGO (Jan. 7, 2010) – Association professionals aspiring to advance their careers in 2010 may find it easier to keep their New Year’s resolution thanks to the Association Forum of Chicagoland, which is now accepting applications for its 2010-2011 Workforce Diversity Scholarship Program.
The one-year program, which runs from April 1, 2010, until March 31, 2011, provides up to six scholarship winners with complimentary education and resources to help them meet their professional goals in association and nonprofit management. It enables recipients to attend seminars and training programs, helps them network with peers and experienced association professionals, and pairs them with mentors who can assist in career planning. The application deadline is Feb. 26, 2010.
Awarded annually to association professionals from underrepresented populations who are in the developmental stages of their careers, the scholarships equip recipients with the kind of association industry knowledge, relationships and opportunities that fuel short-term motivation while ensuring long-term success, asserts Association Forum President and CEO Christie A. Tarantino, CAE, who cites a 2009 study from inclusive workplace advocate Catalyst, which found that talent management practices such as mentoring and employee networking increase career satisfaction for diverse individuals by up to 22 percent.
“Association Forum’s Workforce Diversity Scholarships are designed not only to open doors for scholars, but also to help them through those doors so they can access opportunities on the other side,” Tarantino said. “For ambitious young professionals, the scholarships are therefore indispensable tools that they can use to learn the skills they need, make the contacts they want and build careers that they love.”
“Diversity has proven bottom-line benefits for organizations of all types and sizes,” Tarantino continued. “Developing underrepresented populations in our profession is one way the Association Forum can help Chicagoland associations realize the ROI on workforce diversity.”
In order to receive a Workforce Diversity Scholarship, applicants must belong to an underrepresented group based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. In addition, applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in the association/nonprofit field. Scholarship recipients are chosen through a process of nomination, application and interviews by Association Forum’s Diversity and Workforce Development Committee.
The Workforce Diversity Scholarship Program is part of Association Forum’s Diversity Workforce Partnership, a five-year commitment to diversity in the Chicagoland association community.
