Shades of Beige A few weeks ago, we announced that the Forum would be moving to new office
space at 10 S. Riverside Plaza, around the first of May. We are now neck-deep
into plans for the facility. We are building out from scratch, and so every bit
of the environment will be new, from carpet to wall coverings to the location of
electrical outlets. And just abut everything we put into it will be new, from
desk chairs to telephones. There are hundreds of decisions, big and small, that
need to be made.
Some may see this as a great deal of fun. While I am thrilled with the
eventual outcome, I must confess that slugging through the process is not my
idea of a good time. There are worse things, to be sure, and the Forum is very
fortunate to be in a position to create and furnish a new facility. But, my
excitement with the project is dampened somewhat by the endless choices and
options that confront me.
One example is selecting new office workstations. The Merchandise Mart
provided a smorgasbord of vendors with an astonishing array of choices, taxing
my shopping stamina to the breaking point. But after asking a handful to submit
proposals, I found that the journey was just beginning. Comparison was next to
impossible. We finally selected a vendor and I thought I was home free before
discovering the frightening reality: hundreds of fabric choices and a universe
of configuration alternatives were presented. My colleague, Pamm Schroeder, CAE,
and our interior architects and designer, Techno, have been instrumental in the
process, and have provided much needed and admired collaboration and guidance.
Without them I would be lost in a forest of fabric swatches by now.
Consumers have demanded variety and customization, and business has responded
with options, choices and alternatives. Companies that offer office furniture
and systems have certainly responded to this demand, with great creativity and
complete flexibility. While this sure beats having no choices, the prospect of
unlimited choices isn't very helpful, either. After all, how many shades of
beige does the world really need?
Please join us on June 20 for an Open
House at the new facility and you'll get to see how it all came
together. Just don't bring any fabric samples along.
