Association Forum: 110 Years of Advancing the Professional Practice of Association Management

From 1916 to Today—A Legacy of Leadership and Innovation

The year was 1916. War clouds loomed over Europe, Congress introduced a federal income tax, and the Chicago Cubs played their first game at Wrigley Field. Amid this backdrop, 18 visionary association executives gathered at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago. Their mission? To create a space for collaboration and professional growth. From that meeting, the Chicago Business Secretaries Forum was born—our first name, our first step toward shaping an industry.

More Than A Century of Milestones and a Future of Possibilities

Over the past 110 years, Association Forum has evolved from a small group of secretaries into a dynamic hub for association professionals. Here’s a glimpse of our journey:

  • 1916: The first organizational meeting sparks a movement.
  • 1920s–1950s: Growth and professionalization, including the creation of national programs and schools.
  • 1960s–1990s: Expansion of membership and the launch of the CAE credential.
  • 2000s–2010s: Introduction of the Forum Promise, Association Week, and diversity initiatives.
  • 2020s and Beyond: Embracing technology, hybrid learning, and inclusive leadership to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
